England fans beware

Football fans who decide to drive to Germany to watch the World Cup could find themselves significantly out of pocket if their motor insurance is inadequate, warns leading insurer Cornhill Direct

More than 100,000 England fans are expected to travel to the World Cup with many driving their own vehicles to Germany.

All UK car insurance policies provide the minimum cover required in all European Union (EU) countries. But many motorists do not enjoy the same comprehensive cover when they drive abroad as they do at home. For example you may not be covered for accidental damage or hospital expenses following an accident.

Cornhill Direct Underwriting Manager, Ian Firth, said: ‘With World Cup fever sweeping the country, checking you’ve got the right insurance is often the last thing on people’s minds.

Their nightmare scenario became reality last August when they broke down in France.

Mr Wilks, 71, said: ‘Nobody ....cont/

likes being stranded in a foreign country, so you can imagine how we felt when our car suddenly stopped near Strasbourg. Thankfully we are with Cornhill Direct Rescue and they sorted out everything for us.

‘We spent the night in a local hotel and were given a hire car to get back to Calais all paid for by Cornhill. They also booked the ferry crossing and we had another hire car waiting for us to make the rest of the journey to Devon. A week later my car was delivered to my local garage for repair.

‘I would recommend to any England fans driving to Germany to make sure they are covered. It could be the best decision they make this year.’
